Bullying

Bullying is:

  • When someone purposely hurts someone else,

  • It happens over and over

  • The person being bullied feel scared or powerless like there is nothing they can do to stop it.

If the problem does not contain all three things then it is probably an accident, argument, or mean moment.

How we can help W.W. Robinson students!

Classroom Lessons

We meet with each homeroom once a month.  During this time we focus on academic, social/emotional, and career skills. We will teach friendship skills, respecting differences, making healthy choices, study skills, safety, and career development. This year, we will be teaching lessons from the MindUp curriculum.

Small Groups

Small groups are a good way to work with students who have similar needs.  The groups generally meet for 6 - 8 weeks and occur during lunch time.  Some groups we may run are social skills, self-control, study skills, family changes, coping strategies, etc. We require parental permission if a small group is recommended for a child.

Individual

Some students may need more individual support to help them with a specific area of concern.  We welcome referrals from school staff, parents, and community agency personnel.

Mental Health

Professionals

This list is provided to assist students and their families in locating counseling services.  Inclusion of therapists or counselors on this list does not imply endorsement by Shenandoah County Public Schools nor does omission imply disapproval.

The Shenandoah County Public School Division is not responsible for any payment of fees for counseling or therapy.

Revised 2/8/17

Prepared by:

The Special Education Department

Shenandoah County Public Schools

Counseling or therapy is sometimes recommended for students and/or their families to deal with concerns that are beyond the scope of traditional education.  This list of mental health professionals is offered to help you contact someone with the skills to help.

There are many kinds of professionals who can work with students and/or their families.  Some are medical doctors and others are trained in graduate schools at colleges and universities.  It is suggested that you ask questions about how they can help and share information about the problems that are affecting your child and/or family.

This booklet has several sections to assist you.  First, there is an outline to help you begin a conversation with the mental health professional.  Next, you will find a list of professionals along with their addresses and phone numbers divided by geographical area.  Also included is a notation about the degrees these people hold.  Efforts were made to contact mental health professionals in a wide area so all parts of Shenandoah County can easily reach these services.

Psychiatrists = Medical doctors to primarily prescribe medication.  They generally do not do counseling.

LPC (Licensed Professional Counselors) = Usually a psychologist whose primary job is to do counseling.

LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) = A social worker who specializes in counseling

Counselors and How To Meet Them

Choose a mental health professional to call.  Prepare what you will say and ask questions.  Here are some suggestions:

Hello, my name is _________________________________.

Mr. or Mrs. ______________________ at my child’s school suggested counseling for my child.  The concerns are:___________________________

Do you work with children my child’s age?

Do you work with this type of problem?

Do you work with the family or only the child?

What can you tell me about fees for the first visit and each session?

Do you take my insurance? (Be sure to have your insurance card available when you call).

What can I expect from counseling?

When can we schedule the first appointment?
